Green River Academy offers multiple ways for you to experience the origins of one of the most historic remaining Academy buildings. Whether you’re part of a group, or traveling solo, we have your visit covered.

ORIGINS TOUR
Experience the story of the Green River Academy and the town that built it. Learn about the western frontier, early city design, educational equality, architecture, and the incredible story of how one of the most notable and effective Academy institutions flourished. Learn about how Green River Academy came to be through exciting stories performed by our guides who tour with you in period attire through the town of Elkton and the historic Academy campus.

IMMERSIVE TOUR
Become a 19th century student as you experience the Green River Academy though exciting demonstrations and experiments! Enjoy a dazzling spectacle of instruction with fun and fascinating performances by period dressed instructors, hands-on artifacts, costumes, all set in ornate 19th-Century classrooms. Enjoy three of the Academy’s classes including Chemistry, Astronomy, and Art! (tour is 45 minutes for groups of 10 or more)

All courses below are included in the Green River Academy’s “Immersive Tour.” All courses are interactive and may require interaction between guests and our guides.
CHEMISTRY
Our Chemistry course includes an impressive display of known 19th-Century chemical reactions. Join in on the fun, and find your desk while your instructor, dressed in period costume, instructs with a fascinating and captivating narrative with brilliant displays of color, expanding foam towers, brilliantly pigmented smoke, and fiery flashes.
ASTRONOMY
Wonderous constellations projected overhead, using the 19th-Century power of the magic lantern, come to life! Enter the astronomy classroom’s planetarium for a fascinating and spectral look a the night sky and the enchanting traditions and stories associated with various global cultures and their views of our universe.
ART
Painting, drawing, and sculpture comes alive with a narrative storytelling of art through the ages. Learn the driving talents and cultures that have set the stage for thousands of years of expression. Paint a portrait of the Green River Academy as instructed by our Art Instructor In-Residence and take it home with you as a keepsake of your visit.

FOR TEACHERS
If you are a teacher or guardian, and are interested in having your students tour the Green River Academy, a special tour rate is available. If you would like to have lunch provided for your students, the Green River Academy can provide wholesome and affordable lunches for a small fee. Email us for field-trip inquires. Instructional materials available on request.

Free street parking is available on Goebel Avenue. If Goebel Avenue does not have any parking spaces remaining, visitors may park on the Elkton town square or at the Todd County Courthouse and walk to the Green River Academy.
